Holgate

Holgate is the southern most end of Long Beach Island and home to the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge.    Holgate is mainly residential in nature but does offer some commercial properties.    The end of Holgate is home to some amazing sunsets and on a clear day you can see Atlantic City in the distance.  If you  are traveling southbound on the boulevard on LBI you will end up in Holgate’s parking lot.  The Holgate Parking lot is the start of LBI’s famous 18 mile run.

Holgate has many wonderful perks, but Holgate is also home to the infamous greenheads, which is certainly something to keep in mind when considering Holgate.  This is not to say that greenheads are only in Holgate but it does appear that there is a heavier concentration of greenheads and flies in Holgate (than other areas of LBI) given Holgate’s environment.

It is also important to keep in mind that Holgate was one of the hardest hit areas on LBI during Superstorm Sandy.  It has since rebounded, but storms and the consequences of same are always something to keep in mind when considering a purchase on LBI.

Holgate boasts some amazing rooftop panoramic views and offers a lot of serenity given its location.  Holgate’s location also requires a bit of a travel to and from the LBI bridge or the causeway.   In the summer it could take upwards of 45 minutes to get from the bridge to Holgate so one may want to stop at the Acme on their way to Holgate.  Also given its location, Holgate tends to trade a little lower than some other areas of LBI.

Ultimately, Holgate is not for everyone but I find the ones who choose Holgate, for the most part, absolutely love it.   There is definitely a strong Holgate community that very much appreciates Holgate for the many things it has to offer.
